Choosing uPVC Replacement Window Handles
Window handles are a fundamental component of uPVC frames and must match the existing frame. The spindle size is what determines whether your new uPVC handles will fit.
See the table below for a quick checklist to take note of your uPVC window handle's spindle. This will ensure that you purchase the correct replacement window handle for your double glazed window.
Espag Handle
Espag handles are the most commonly used style of handle found on windows made of upvc (they're often found in aluminium and timber too). The handles have a square spindle which extends from the handle's back and locks into the multi-point locking mechanism of the window. The handle is used to operate the locking mechanism that is attached to the window.
Window handles from Espag come in many different styles and functions. Some are equipped with an option to push-button to lock the closed' position, as well as key-locking (and fire-escape non-locking where required). Many of them meet the Secure by Design standard to add an extra layer of security. They also come with a range of different spindle lengths which can be adjusted using spindle sleeves to reduce the size of the protruding spindle.
Yale has examined the espagnolette handles we offer to ensure they meet all the standards you'd expect. They work with upvc windows, timber windows and aluminium frames. We have a range of colors and match the handle to the hinges you have already.
Another important feature of espagnolette handles is their step height. This is the distance from the top of the handle to where it sits on the frame, and it is essential to make sure it's right in order to ensure a tight and secure fit. Fortunately, most of our handle styles comply with industry standards of 43mm between the screw hole centres.
You can choose between straight or Cranked handles. Cranked handles can be utilized in situations where the handle of the espagnolette is close to the frame edge. They provide more room to open the window.
Our replacement range for handles made of upvc includes a variety of finishes, styles, and colors that match the decor of your home, such as polished chrome, satin nickel, and antique brass. Some of our products come with soft-close technology to lessen the sound your windows make when they shut.
Cockspur Handle
The Cockspur Window Handle is a handle made specifically for the designer who wishes to provide their customers a stylish and durable design. These handles can be used with uPVC windows or aluminium frames. They function by using a spur that locks over the frame edge to secure the window. The window handle can also be lockable, so that it can only be opened when it is pushed. This adds additional security. The handle comes in 5 different finishes with both right and left hand versions allowing the fabricator to accommodate a greater variety of windows.
These cockspur window handles are supplied with 3 packing pieces with different thickness, which allows them to be adjusted for a wide range of backset sizes. Each packer can be removed from the handle nose or added to the size of the step to get an optimum distance of 9mm and 21mm. The handle is also available in left or right handed versions and with a straight or curved nose option.
It is crucial to determine your current handle height before buying a new handle to ensure it will fit correctly. A handle that is not right can result in a variety of issues including the inability to close the window. This can be a hassle for homeowners and create unnecessary stress.
A cockspur is a handle used on older uPVC or timber windows. The handles do not come with any integrated window locks, unlike the Espag handles that are used on modern windows. They come with shootbolts or an Espagnolette bar lock.
The espagnolette handle (often abbreviated as 'espag" or "espag") is the most common handle type used on new uPVC Casement Windows. When you turn the espagnolette handle it activates an Encloser locking mechanism from Yale which is more secure than a conventional British standard handle or cockspur. This is because the handle espagnolette turns several locks to secure the window frame.
Handle by turning and tilting
These windows are a very popular choice for people who want to improve the ventilation in their home, while offering an additional level of security. Like their name suggests they have a tilt and turn feature that lets them tilt at 90 degrees, which allows for a small opening or drop to a hopper-style for full ventilation. The dual function gives them an attractive appearance which can enhance the awe factor of double-glazed windows.

Tilt and turn windows are more complex compared to other types of double-glazed windows, which can increase their price because they require more components and additional labour during installation. However, they are worth the cost because they can enhance the value of your home and provide a myriad of advantages.
One of the major benefits is that they allow you to clean your windows from the inside without using external ladders. This is perfect for those who live in high-rise structures or flats since it eliminates the need to go outside and the risk of falling from a height. Tilt and turn windows provide additional security since the window locks when in a tilted or turned position which means that intruders who want to get inside cannot open them from the inside.
Often you will find these handles on European style windows, specifically those in Germany however, you can also have them installed in UK homes. The uPVC replacement handle is typically a spindle based one and is fitted with a 7mm square spindle which is usually found in lengths of 32mm, 38mm or 44mm. The base of the handle also tends to be wider than the majority of handles. This is why they are referred to as a 'tilt safe' window handle because it can only be rotated to open the window after it is locked in either an open or tilt position.
To replace a uPVC window handle that turns and turns, you must first remove the old handle with the screwdriver. The screws are typically hidden behind a backplate with a spring loaded. Simply lift the backplate and then twist it until you can see two screw holes. By using the ruler or tape measure you can determine the distance between these two screws that is typically 43mm centre to center. Once you have the measurement you can then select the appropriate size handle to fit your uPVC windows.
